Do you think babies weighing over 9lb are heavy? Well, think again! A baby weighing 13 pounds has been born vaginally in Spain. The mum is a 40 year old British woman who has already three other children. All her children were “heavy” at birth, weighing over 9 pounds.

The woman didnt even need epidural. It was “au naturale”. Are you wincing at the idea? Well, I know Gentlebirth uses as one of its affirmations. “My baby is the perfect size for my body.” Is it all in the power of the mind?
Having a large baby is one of the main reasons why women are given c-sections. The reason is the fear that the baby might get stuck on its way out. Or in the proper medical words:
“ The baby’s shoulder could get stuck during the second stage (pushing the baby out)– this is called shoulder dystocia. This is more likely with macrosomic babies but it also happens randomly with small babies.”

“Although big babies are at higher risk for shoulder dystocia, most cases of shoulder dystocia happen in smaller babies (Morrison et al. 1992). This is because there are many more small and normal size babies being born than big babies. Unfortunately, researchers have found that it is impossible to predict who will have shoulder dystocia and who will not”
So now, after seeing this, how can they say big babies (just 9lb? tiny things!) can not be delivered vaginally?
